Open Science, International Cooperation in Science

What is Open Science?

Open Science is a concept that includes open access and open data that anyone can view and utilize research materials. Open access is to ensure that all users have access to the literature, and open data is to disclose key data related to the study to the outside world. Prior to the development of the Internet in the past, scientific research results were shared through publications and meetings of some scientists, being discussed and verified. Since the 2000s, information has become readily available due to the spread of the Internet, and information exchanges have been made through e-mail or video conferencing without restrictions on time and space. However, there are occasional cases of research cheating, such as reporting research results without sufficient or reliable evidence. The policy introduced to solve these problems is Open Science. By creating and publicly sharing an open science policy, research has increased reliability and reproducibility, eliminating the cost burden required to access the data and reducing the data gap in data.

COVID-19 Pandemics and Open Access

Through COVID-19, the Open Science movement is taking place more actively. In the case of open access, a field of open science, many are released in a pre-print format, which is not a final paper but an incomplete paper or a paper containing key research content. Many scientists receive a variety of feedback on corona-related papers through open access, and are trying to overcome Corona 19 by informing many people of their research in a short time. In the early days, only about 160 papers related to the corona virus were free of charge in the form of open access, with the rest having to pay to view the paper. However, as the corona virus crisis became increasingly serious, the majority of academic publications around the world were able to open and reuse all papers and data related to the corona virus for free. As a result, nearly all research results related to the corona virus are now available for viewing and downloading through each publisher's own website, and research on the corona virus is actively shared.

Open data used in real life

Open data is a rapidly growing field in open science. In the wake of the corona virus, platforms related to many open data are drawing attention. Currently, open data associated with COVID-19 include the number of confirmed persons, local information, and the path of confirmed persons. Furthermore, we create an application that uses open data to track the path of travel, striving to prevent the spread of virus in many ways. Recently, researchers have directly released data to request solutions to increase the utilization of open data. Typically, large IT companies hold contests to study ways to overcome COVID-19 with corona virus-related data.

Currently, various efforts are underway, such as vaccine development, social distancing, and open science movements to respond to COVID-19. This can be said to have formed a new international cooperative culture, and we hope that a plan to overcome Corona 19 will appear as soon as possible, so that numerous efforts will shine.
